LOCAL INDEPENDENT NEWS: Local Congressional candidate in Tennessee considers contesting nonpartisan election to close party primary. Ahh, the desperation of partisan politics!

• Little-Used Law At Root Of Davis’ Recount Effort (BRISTOL HERALD COURIER - TN) According to published reports, the freshman congressman cited Tennessee election law, which states voters who aren’t party members are ineligible to vote in that party’s primary. He contends Democrats voted in the Republican primary and claims such votes improperly influenced the results. Tennessee, however, has an open primary, meaning party affiliation is not a prerequisite to vote.
• Ramsey says Davis should not challenge results of election (Kingsport Times News - TN) “You declare the way you are voting when you walk into a voting booth,” the Blountville Republican said. “It would be very hard to prove that there was concerted effort to get Democrats to vote in a Republican primary or vice versa. Even if you could prove that, I don’t see it’s illegal.”
• Davis ponders challenge to primary vote (The Hill) Davis told a local paper that he might challenge some of the primary votes based on the voting history of the people who cast them.

Thomas Knapp endorses Gravel’s National Initiative (Knapp for Congress) The latest endorser of Gravel’s “National Initiative for Democracy,” which would enable a process for direct lawmaking by popular vote, is Thomas L. Knapp, the Libertarian Party’s candidate for US House of Representatives from Missouri’s 2nd District.

Michigan independents + Uncommitted Dems + Ron Paul + Dennis Kucinich + Mike Gravel = A challenge to the status quo?

In Michigan, the independent voter, long thought to be McCain’s base, could end up making the difference.... (The Hill) Michigan does not have partisan registration. And according to the Detroit Free Press, McCain knows that winning here is contingent on independents showing up at Tuesday's primary. "The variables of what the independent voters do and the Democratic voters do make it very difficult to predict," he said.

Dems are not expected to have much of a turn out since the DNC asked Dem candidates not to put their names on the ballot and is saying the delegates won't be seated at the (national) convention as a punishment to the state Dems who changed the primary to January 15 (tomorrow) -- before Super Tuesday on Feb. 5. Hillary, Mike Gravel and Dennis J. Kucinich are still on the ballot, but Edwards and Obama took their names off. Some Dems are suggesting their supporters vote "uncommitted"..... Liz Halloran says the war in Iraq momentarily not The Issue for candidates... but don't count on that after the primaries or if the casualty count goes up... (By Liz Halloran, US News & World Report) I agree voters are increasingly wary and weary of the rhetoric, having been taken through the wash by the Dems after the 2006 midterms. Personally I think the electorate is not responding so much to individual issues--whether foreign or domestic policy--but rather is making a statement about how policy gets made. American voters seem to be saying "Insider partisans beware!"

Dan Abrams welcomes change in Justice Dept Civil Rights Division saying "from 2001 to 2006, not one voting discrimination case was brought on behalf of African-American voters." Conversations on Exclusive Debates

The exclusion of Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel from the Des Moines Register debate last Thursday brought an uproar from the grassroots. The non-partisan Committee for a Unified Independent Party reported being cc'd on close to 100 emails that went to Howard Dean and the paper within several hours of notice to protest the anti-democratic move by the party interests. And The Hankster got this video from Representative Press with the comment "Kucinich is excluded from the Democratic Debate because his Iowa Field Director and State Coordinator, Marcos Rubinstein, works from home!?!"

Dandelion Salad among several other blogs ran Jean Hay Bright's piece pointing out that "The concept that only landed gentry should be eligible to participate in the political process is an idea that we threw out, not in the last century, but in the century before that."

Gannett Blog (an independent blog about the Gannett Co.) tells us that "a Des Moines Register tipster says the paper has been hosed by protesters after its controversial decision to exclude Rep. Dennis Kucinich (below) from yesterday's Democratic presidential debate."The protest disrupted the newsroom for two days, jamming the phones,'' the tipster writes today. "After the Kucinich Iowa website announced he wasn't being included in the debate panel, Kucinich supporters posted protests on the comment areas tacked on to any news reports or blogs."

Action Alert: Iowa media excludes Dennis Kucinich from debate

As we come down to the wire for the Iowa Caucus, and polls are shifting, Congressman Dennis Kucinich has been excluded from tomorrow afternoon's Democratic presidential debate, sponsored by the Des Moines Register and Iowa Public Television.

The Des Moines Register stated today that the criteria for participation in the debate that Congressman Kucinich and Senator Mike Gravel did not meet was 1) candidates must have a campaign office in Iowa and 2) candidates must have employed at least one full time staffer in Iowa.

One problem with this criteria is that the candidates just found out about it! And legally, debate sponsors are required to give pre-existing, objective criteria for inclusion. How else can the candidates possibly work to meet the criteria, or challenge it, if not given notice of it?

The Iowa caucuses are on January 3, and all polls show the race being very close. Kucinich may not be a frontrunner, but he does have support in the state. This is exactly the time when Howard Dean and the Democratic Party are supposed to put partisan interests aside and let the people decide!! Here's what you can do: Contact the Des Moines Register and Howard Dean, chair of the Democratic National Committee, to let them know you protest the lack of democracy expressed by the exclusion of Kucinich and Gravel from tomorrow's debate.

Conversations on the Debates

Yeah, I know the presidential candidates are playing game theory with the future of our country and the world.... Yeah, the debates are totally controlled by the media... Yeah, Obama isn't going for the jugular... Yeah, Hillary's a bitch... [Personally I thought the moderators tonight helped set up Hillary for some "good ones", but hey, that's part the game... ]

However, one thing I continued to be astonished by in the current primary season is that Dennis Kucinich is holding on to his debate nitch. Hmmmm..... John Edwards talking about neocons? Obama using the "I" (independent) word AGAIN? Vigor and vim from Joe Biden and Bill Richardson... Could the democratic process still be alive in America?

Gail Collins of the New York Times (who seems to be a Hillary card) wins the headline contest for tonight's Dem debate in Las Vegas: What Happens in Vegas ... starts her piece with "I’m sure you are excited about the big presidential candidate debate tonight." [Sorry, no, that's not clever ironic punitry...!] She goes on: "Nothing in the previous 25 dramatic clashes of the political titans this season can come close to it. Although we did like that moment when Dennis Kucinich revealed that he had spied a U.F.O. at Shirley MacLaine’s house.... Everybody is talking about how, as Bill Clinton himself said last week: “Those boys have been getting tough on her lately.” Two thoughts on that matter. 1) Who do you expect them to pile on? Mike Gravel? [Remember the days when Gail and other journalists were actually defending progressive folks???]

And speaking of the absence of Mike Gravel from tonight's debate, I hear that CNN created a criteria for their "innocent" homespun chat with "the Democratic candidates" designed to exclude Mike Gravel by requiring any participant to have raised $1 million for their campaign [nevermind Greg Chase's challenge grant last month.... guess that's not real money?] I sympathize with Marvin Kitman's outrage on his Huffington Post post: "The same sword of Demosthenes is hanging over Kucinich as the field tightens and the bosses in the smoke-filled rooms begin dumping the also-rans after Iowa...." Mr. Kitman offers some alternative debate structures and seems to have a particular problem with Wolf Blitzer and maybe other media stars, but the structural problem, it seems to me, lies with the exclusive nature of the party system that relies on a good-ol-boys (and gals) club. BTW, the League of Women Voters gave over their authority to run real nonpartisan debates back in 1988.

Do the parties and the media think this kind of elitism and exclusiveness is lost on the American people? Or worse, do they really not care about democracy? Well, maybe. But if Marvin Kitman is the only voice of outrage, we're in trouble!

"I have unresolved faith in the American people," Gravel said in the Nashua Telegraph this week. From Albert McKeon's article here: "Gravel earned recognition in 1971 for single-handedly blocking legislation that would have renewed the military draft during the Vietnam War until the Senate and President Nixon turned his way. He also played a large role in securing the release of the Pentagon Papers – a collection of secret government documents about the war – by reading them into the Congressional record...."

And David Shribman wrote in the Toledo Blade: "Mr. Gravel may be a peripheral presidential candidate but his role in American history can more nearly be described as heroic than peripheral...."

The American people, not just Mike Gravel, are peripheral to the process, and that's the real issue here in America in 2007. We need a national re-org. Heroic? Maybe, maybe not. When our forefathers (and mothers, and sisters and brothers) answered the call in the 1770s, they didn't know if they would be heros or hanged. We're a proud people. Who's speaking for us now?

People will vote soon. Given the choices....
