For the first time in memory, unaffiliated voters in Garfield County outnumber both Republicans and Democrats, leaving both parties scrambling for the hearts of independent voters as they prepare for the November elections.
Unaffiliated voters have long been a large bloc in the county, usually outnumbering Democrats. But the latest numbers show unaffiliated voters outpacing even Republicans, who have long been the county's dominant party.
