This is in regard to the article on the North Carolina Republicans.

In a system of open primaries, each voter picks a party on primary day. Thus (1) independents may vote in either party's primary, and (2) Democrats may vote in the Republican primary, and vice versa.

Since independents are the only non-members eligible to vote in NC's Republican and Democratic primaries, those are SEMI-CLOSED primaries.

I suppose that "open primary" sounds much more SEXY than "semi-closed primary."
