In today's (May 24) NY Daily News, Juan Gonzalez writes in the aftermath of the Deutschbank fire that killed two firefighters Saturday and saw two more injured yesterday by a falling forklift:

"Even as Bloomberg and Scoppetta stonewall here at home, the mayor's lobbyists in Albany have been urging Gov. Spitzer this week to veto new legislation that would force tougher enforcement of safety laws by the city Buildings Department.

"The new law is the brainchild of Assemblyman James Brennan (D-Brooklyn). It would require the Buildings Department, whenever it issues a citation for a hazardous condition at a construction site or existing building, to return every 60 days for repeat inspections until the hazard is eliminated.

"The city's construction boom and lax enforcement in recent years, Brennan says, have led to "massive noncompliance with the building code" and "a surge of accidents and deaths for construction workers."

"Bloomberg's aides, instead of backing the new safety measure, have urged the governor to veto the bill. They claim it will cost the city an additional $10 million to implement."

What impact will this have should Bloomberg want the votes of progressive independents?
