Iowa: Streak of independence

From the Daily Nonpareil:
...Iowans have a streak of independence about them, he said.
"Iowa voters are not straight-ticket types," Mathiasen said. "We have Sens. Grassley and Harkin - about as opposite as you can get. Also, Iowa has gone for Reagan, Dukakis, Clinton, Gore and Bush."
Because of that independence, party grassroots turnout efforts will be a key, he said.
"It's a pretty clear choice if you are a Republican or a Democrat, so the Independent voters could make the difference."... [more]
