Dear Mr. Obama: You need independent voters for progress!

I received an email yesterday from Barack Obama's campaign. Here's the message I sent:

Mr. Obama:
I agree that we need to end the war in Iraq, and as an independent, I am watching all the candidates closely to see who will have the guts to take on, not just the Bush administration, but the complicity of the Democrats as well. So far, only Mike Gravel, Ron Paul and Dennis Kuscinich have come close to that. I am watching your campaign and hoping that you will dialogue with independents around the country and use us as a source of strength. The Democratic Party ultimately will not save this country. Independents need to know that you are serious about putting America above the interests of your party. THAT would be progress!

Sincerely,
Nancy Hanks

Nancy,

Obama's site has more information but also see his general approach for foreign policy on the Foreign Affairs magazine site. Besides his 2002 opinion that we should not have invaded Iraq, it will give you his views.

Also, please note that Barack has told auto leaders he's willing to compromise and help them thru tax cuts so they can fund health benefits to their workers but they need to do their part for America and increase CAFE standards. He told a group of young black males that fatherhood means more than biology but the government needs to partner with parents to facilitate opportunity and hope. He told parents and kids to turn off the tv and video games and study more to do their part. He told teachers that they need to be valued more, but also said he'd work with them (not impose on them) meaningful standards to judge their work and they need to accept the concept of merit pay; he's expecting responsibility and accountability in exchange for more pay and resources.

These are all non-pandering positions worthy of your Indepenent consideration. Obama refuses most artificial either-or approaches of politics and often will surprise you with a "neither" or a "both" answer. Barack seeks to unite us and the best in all of us.
