Fair elections are paramount to democracy
April 30, 2006Lauren RitchieOrlando Sentinel - In Florida, everyone gets to vote in a primary election when only one party fields candidates. That's called the open-primary system. But when two or more parties offer candidates, then the election is "closed," and voters cast ballots only for those in the party in which they are registered.
The loophole is this: Write-in candidates can force the closing of the primary, as they did in two important local elections in this county in November 2004. More than 80,000 non-Republican voters --about 50,000 Democrats and 30,000 others --weren't allowed to help choose the superintendent of schools or the District 3 county commissioner.... more
