Florida: Independents are only opposition in local races

No Party Challengers for Putnam, but Two Independents Step Up
By Bill RuftyThe Ledger May 13, 2006 LAKELAND -- U.S. Rep. Adam Putnam, R-Bartow, is the only Republican member of Congress from Florida not to pull a Democratic opponent for the 2006 election.
The qualifying process ended for federal elective office at noon Friday.
All three Republicans with parts of Polk County in their districts qualified without opponents from their own party.
That included Putnam in the 12th Congressional District, which covers roughly the southern two-thirds of the county; Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R-Brooksville in the 5th District, covering most of Polk north of Interstate 4; and Rep. Dave Weldon of Indialantic, whose 15th District covers a tiny corner of Northeast Polk.
While he faces no Democratic opposition, Putnam faces two candidates running with no party affiliation -- Ed Bowlin III of Lake Wales and former state Rep. Joe Viscusi of Lakeland.....
